View of the Bund

This highly unusual carpet, depicts the bombardment of Shanghai harbour by the Japanese navy on January 28, 1932. This attack was a response to the Chinese student protest, against the Japanese occupation of Manchuria. The Chinese warships and traditional junks in the harbour, are being attacked from the air by two aeroplanes. All ships, but one, are flying the national Chinese Republican flag. On the right is a large white warship, flying the American stars and stripes. In the background, the large buildings on the Bund are prominently depicted. This carpet was probably commissioned by the local Chinese authorities or one of the prominent Western companies housed on the Bund. The Chinese characters read ‘Panoramic View of the Shanghai Bund’.
